Blue Christmas Service, Wednesday 7:30pm, everyone welcome!

In the past you may have had misgivings about attending the ‘Blue Christmas’ service at Mossley. Possibly because of the strong emphasis upon loss, or maybe, that you thought it might be a little sad. This year however the Church leaders of Mossley want you to make it ‘your space’ to step aside for an hour and be guided through moments of reflection, with the use of seasonal readings, meditative music and visual aids.

Join us in the main church sanctuary this Wednesday evening, in search of the true meaning of the season. 22nd December 2021 at 7:30pm.
Full COVID guidelines and compliance.

Reflection on Candlelit 9 Lessons & Carols

In Mossley this morning we were treated to a beautifully moving multimedia walk through of the Nativity Story. The Candles and fairy lights that twinkled around the church embellished the mood and encouraged renewed child-like wonder.

Everyone who attended would undoubtedly like to reiterate their thanks to Colin and Christine and anyone who took part in the video presentation. COVID Restrictions were fully adhered to, yet taken to a new level by Our Fathers faithful servants thinking creatively outside the box.

Also it was incredibly encouraging to see a return to our family gathering those who until now haven’t been able to attend due to illness or shielding.

Sadly we are unable to post a link from this mornings Candlelit 9 Lessons & Carols Service. However if you click on the window below you will find last years beautiful meditation with passages being read by our Mossley Congregation and the addition of a 2021 updated epilogue from our Minister Sam Campbell at the conclusion.

Alternatively if you wish to ‘cast’ directly to your SMART television and experience a full ‘at home’ experience. Then follow this LINK to take you directly to our Mossley Methodist YouTube page.

9 Lessons Carol Service, audio video from members of Mossley Methodist Church. Updated from Christmas 2020

This Sunday Morning 9 Lessons & Carols

Every Christmas in Mossley (that is up until these unprecedented times) we have met together to sing carols and follow readings journeying through the Nativity Story. Last year we missed out meeting together, however, if you reflect back you will remember the congregation pulling together to create a beautiful online reflective presentation.

This year, at our 10.30am Sunday Morning Service, Mossleys congregation have stepped up to the plate once again. Expect the main sanctuary to be traditionally dressed with candles, coupled with a ‘hybrid’ multi-media presentation and lead by our the Minister The Rev Sam Campbell.

I have had the privilege of a short preview, and I am confident that everyone who attends will re-experience the magic and reality of the Nativity Story. So expect to be moved – with an official mascara warning:)

Let’s join together this Sunday Morning 10.30am …wear your tinsel or Christmas jumper;)

Full COVID guidelines and restrictions apply. Masks are also back to being worn AT ALL TIMES – seated or moving within the building. If possible take a Lateral Flow test before coming out. If anyone has any symptoms at all then please be kind and do not attend. The MCI encourages taking up the vaccination and booster.

Luke 3:7-18

John said to the crowds coming out to be baptised by him, ‘You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, “We have Abraham as our father.” For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. The axe has been laid to the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.’

10 ‘What should we do then?’ the crowd asked.

11 John answered, ‘Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.’

12 Even tax collectors came to be baptised. ‘Teacher,’ they asked, ‘what should we do?’

13 ‘Don’t collect any more than you are required to,’ he told them.

14 Then some soldiers asked him, ‘And what should we do?’

He replied, ‘Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely – be content with your pay.’

15 The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John might possibly be the Messiah. 16 John answered them all, ‘I baptise you with[a] water. But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptise you with[b]the Holy Spirit and fire. 17 His winnowing fork is in his hand to clear his threshing-floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.’ 18 And with many other words John exhorted the people and proclaimed the good news to them.

Malachi 3:1-4

‘I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come,’ says the Lord Almighty.

But who can endure the day of his coming? Who can stand when he appears? For he will be like a refiner’s fire or a launderer’s soap. He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; he will purify the Levites and refine them like gold and silver. Then the Lord will have men who will bring offerings in righteousness, and the offerings of Judah and Jerusalem will be acceptable to the Lord, as in days gone by, as in former years.

Joel 2:28-32
The day of the Lord

28 ‘And afterwards,
    I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
    your old men will dream dreams,
    your young men will see visions.
29 Even on my servants, both men and women,
    I will pour out my Spirit in those days.
30 I will show wonders in the heavens
    and on the earth,
    blood and fire and billows of smoke.
31 The sun will be turned to darkness
    and the moon to blood
    before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord.
32 And everyone who calls
    on the name of the Lord will be saved;
for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem
    there will be deliverance,
    as the Lord has said,
even among the survivors
    whom the Lord calls.[a]

Acts 2:42-47
The fellowship of the believers

42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favour of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

“The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognise him.” John 1: 9-10

Philippians 4:4-7
Final exhortations

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

1 Samuel 2:1-10
Hannah’s prayer

Then Hannah prayed and said:

‘My heart rejoices in the Lord;
    in the Lord my horn[a] is lifted high.
My mouth boasts over my enemies,
    for I delight in your deliverance.

‘There is no one holy like the Lord;
    there is no one besides you;
    there is no Rock like our God.

‘Do not keep talking so proudly
    or let your mouth speak such arrogance,
for the Lord is a God who knows,
    and by him deeds are weighed.

‘The bows of the warriors are broken,
    but those who stumbled are armed with strength.
Those who were full hire themselves out for food,
    but those who were hungry are hungry no more.
She who was barren has borne seven children,
    but she who has had many sons pines away.

‘The Lord brings death and makes alive;
    he brings down to the grave and raises up.
The Lord sends poverty and wealth;
    he humbles and he exalts.
He raises the poor from the dust
    and lifts the needy from the ash heap;
he seats them with princes
    and makes them inherit a throne of honour.

‘For the foundations of the earth are the Lord’s;
    on them he has set the world.
He will guard the feet of his faithful servants,
    but the wicked will be silenced in the place of darkness.

‘It is not by strength that one prevails;
10     those who oppose the Lord will be broken.
The Most High will thunder from heaven;
    the Lord will judge the ends of the earth.

‘He will give strength to his king
    and exalt the horn of his anointed.’

Ruth 3:1-5
Ruth and Boaz at the threshing-floor

One day Ruth’s mother-in-law Naomi said to her, ‘My daughter, I must find a home[a] for you, where you will be well provided for. Now Boaz, with whose women you have worked, is a relative of ours. Tonight he will be winnowing barley on the threshing-floor. Wash, put on perfume, and get dressed in your best clothes. Then go down to the threshing-floor, but don’t let him know you are there until he has finished eating and drinking. When he lies down, note the place where he is lying. Then go and uncover his feet and lie down. He will tell you what to do.’

‘I will do whatever you say,’ Ruth answered.

Ruth 4:13-17
Naomi gains a son

13 So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife. When he made love to her, the Lord enabled her to conceive, and she gave birth to a son. 14 The women said to Naomi: ‘Praise be to the Lord, who this day has not left you without a guardian-redeemer. May he become famous throughout Israel! 15 He will renew your life and sustain you in your old age. For your daughter-in-law, who loves you and who is better to you than seven sons, has given him birth.’

16 Then Naomi took the child in her arms and cared for him. 17 The women living there said, ‘Naomi has a son!’ And they named him Obed. He was the father of Jesse, the father of David.
