In Loving Memory of Hettie Haffern

It is with great sadness that we share news of the passing of Hettie Haffern, peacefully last Friday, a much treasured member of our Mossley Methodist family for many decades.

Hettie had a gift for making everything about other people. Whether she was supporting a project or event, a service, or simply showing up week after week, she rarely arrived alone. She brought family with her, and friends too, gathering people in the way only a truly generous heart knows how to do.

Hettie gave many years of faithful service to the Methodist Women in Ireland, serving as treasurer and representing our ladies at district level. It was another quiet expression of a life spent in service to others, something Hettie carried out with the same steady, capable dedication she brought to everything.

Perhaps her greatest gift to our church was the craft club she founded, which met faithfully for years. What began as a shared skill became a quiet mission all its own, as the group knitted and donated countless items, each one a small act of witness to Christ’s love. Hettie’s talents never stayed folded away. She let them flow out into service, and so many people were warmed by what her hands and heart made together.

When illness meant Hettie had to step back from church life a few years ago, we felt the loss keenly. She has been missed every week since. We hold onto the memory of her gentle presence and her lovely smile, and we give thanks to God for a life so generously lived.

The leadership and church family extend our love and prayers to Hettie’s husband Norman, her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, and to all who held her dear.

Service details

A Service of Thanksgiving for Hettie’s life will be held at Mossley Methodist Church on Wednesday 22nd July 2026 at 10.30am, with committal afterwards at Ballyclare Cemetery.

Keeping Hearts Young: The JMA Legacy in Mossley

There’s something beautifully unusual about our JMA tradition here in Mossley – something that speaks to the enduring nature of love and faith across generations.
For many years, Mildred Wallace has been the faithful guardian of our Junior Mission for All boxes, overseeing their distribution and collection with quiet dedication. But what makes our JMA story special isn’t just Mildred’s commitment – it’s the remarkable way our community has embraced this mission.

A Mossley Tradition Like No Other

In most churches, JMA boxes are carried by children, filled with their pocket money and brought back brimming with excitement. In Mossley, we’ve created something different, something deeper. Parents and grandparents who once took out boxes for their little ones continue the tradition long after those children have grown. They still collect in their names, still contribute to global mission work, still hold fast to that connection.
Perhaps it’s because our children will always be our children, no matter their age. Perhaps it’s because once you’ve invested in someone’s faith journey, you can’t quite let go. Whatever the reason, it’s a testament to love that refuses to fade and faith that spans the years.

Time to Return Your Boxes

Mildred is now calling for all JMA boxes to be returned over the next few weeks so they can be counted and lodged before Christmas. Each box, whether it’s been collecting coins for a five-year-old or a fifty-year-old, represents prayers, sacrifice, and a commitment to supporting mission work around the world.

An Invitation to Continue the Legacy

While we sadly don’t have children’s programmes or regular young attendance at our church, the JMA legacy doesn’t have to end in Mossley. If you have a child or grandchild, a niece or nephew even – whether they live near or far, whether they’re toddlers or teenagers – you could take out a box in their name.
You’d be:
• Supporting vital mission work throughout the world
• Keeping the JMA tradition alive in our church
• Creating a tangible connection between your loved one and our global Methodist family
• Investing in their spiritual inheritance, even from a distance
It’s a gift that keeps giving – teaching generosity, building awareness of God’s work worldwide, and maintaining a thread of faith that connects generations.

Isaiah’s Commission

6 In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted,seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. 2 Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying.3 And they were calling to one another:

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty;
    the whole earth is full of his glory.”

4 At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.

5 “Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.”

6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.”

8 Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?”

And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”

9 He said, “Go and tell this people:

“‘Be ever hearing, but never understanding;
    be ever seeing, but never perceiving.’
10 Make the heart of this people calloused;
    make their ears dull
    and close their eyes.[a]
Otherwise they might see with their eyes,
    hear with their ears,
    understand with their hearts,
and turn and be healed.”

11 Then I said, “For how long, Lord?”

And he answered:

“Until the cities lie ruined
    and without inhabitant,
until the houses are left deserted
    and the fields ruined and ravaged,
12 until the Lord has sent everyone far away
    and the land is utterly forsaken.
13 And though a tenth remains in the land,
    it will again be laid waste.
But as the terebinth and oak
    leave stumps when they are cut down,
    so the holy seed will be the stump in the land.”

7 But the Lord said to me, ‘Do not say, “I am too young.” You must go to everyone I send you to and say whatever I command you. 8 Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you and will rescue you,’ declares the Lord.

9 Then the Lord reached out his hand and touched my mouth and said to me, ‘I have put my words in your mouth. 10 See, today I appoint you over nations and kingdoms to uproot and tear down, to destroy and overthrow, to build and to plant.’

1 Corinthians 12:1-11
Concerning spiritual gifts

12 Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. 2 You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to dumb idols. 3 Therefore I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, ‘Jesus be cursed,’ and no one can say, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ except by the Holy Spirit.

4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.

7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8 To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues,[a] and to still another the interpretation of tongues.[b] 11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.

The helper of Israel

41 ‘Be silent before me, you islands!
    Let the nations renew their strength!
Let them come forward and speak;
    let us meet together at the place of judgment.

2 ‘Who has stirred up one from the east,
    calling him in righteousness to his service?[a]
He hands nations over to him
    and subdues kings before him.
He turns them to dust with his sword,
    to wind-blown chaff with his bow.
3 He pursues them and moves on unscathed,
    by a path his feet have not travelled before.
4 Who has done this and carried it through,
    calling forth the generations from the beginning?
I, the Lord – with the first of them
    and with the last – I am he.’

5 The islands have seen it and fear;
    the ends of the earth tremble.
They approach and come forward;
6     they help each other
    and say to their companions, ‘Be strong!’
7 The metalworker encourages the goldsmith,
    and the one who smooths with the hammer

John the Baptist prepares the way

3 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar – when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, Herod tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene – 2 during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. 3 He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 4 As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet:

‘A voice of one calling in the wilderness,
“Prepare the way for the Lord,
    make straight paths for him.
5 Every valley shall be filled in,
    every mountain and hill made low.
The crooked roads shall become straight,
    the rough ways smooth.
6 And all people will see God’s salvation.”

Christmas is fast approaching but for some families this is a very stressful time as they worry about how they will provide for their family. In recent years this has been increasingly difficult for many families due to the increased cost of living expenses. We at Newtownabbey Methodist Mission contact various agencies and invite them to send in referrals for the families who they know would benefit greatly from our help. We are able to provide assistance to referred families living in the BT36, BT37, ВТ38, BT39 postcode areas.

Our church family in Mossley Methodist will be continuing our annual support and receiving donations for this Christmas Appeal at our Sunday morning service on 1st of December 2024.

Luke 21:25-36

25 ‘There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea.26 People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. 27 At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.’

29 He told them this parable: ‘Look at the fig-tree and all the trees.30 When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near. 31 Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near.

32 ‘Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.

34 ‘Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life, and that day will close on you suddenly like a trap. 35 For it will come on all those who live on the face of the whole earth. 36 Be always on the watch, and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.’

9 See, the day of the Lord is coming
    – a cruel day, with wrath and fierce anger –
to make the land desolate
    and destroy the sinners within it.
10 The stars of heaven and their constellations
    will not show their light.
The rising sun will be darkened

James 5:13-20
The prayer of faith

13 Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. 14 Is anyone among you ill? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. 16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

17 Elijah was a human being, even as we are. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. 18 Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.

19 My brothers and sisters, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring that person back, 20 remember this: whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins.
