Help Bring Christmas To Families That Are Struggling

Mossley Methodist continues to support the Newtownabbey Methodist Mission this Christmas. However it’s a little different this year as they will only be accepting money donations, so sadly we won’t get the joy of choosing our own toy. Please bring your donations in an envelope tomorrow 22nd of November. Alternatively when we re-open on the 13th of December 2020.

“This year is very different from any we have experienced before. Because of Covid-19, we will not be able to have our usual collection and distribution of toys to families in need, nor will we be able to give out food vouchers at the rate we have done in the past.

We still realise that there is great hardship being experienced by many households and that the Christmas period presents particular difficulties.

We will not be collecting toys this year but to allow us to continue to help others, we will be asking that you make donations of money to us which we will use to provide Gift Vouchers from a local toy shop so that the children will not go without.

In the past many families received vouchers that could be exchanged in the EuroSpar at the Diamond in Rathcoole for food and electricity and gas. The Food Banks are now covering the food element, so our vouchers this Christmas will cover only electricity and gas.

As we were not able to have our usual Appeal during the spring due to the Lock Down, and as the Mission has been continuing to issue our General Vouchers to the needy throughout the year, our funds have been greatly depleted.”

Ephesians 1:15-23
Thanksgiving and prayer

15 For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all God’s people, 16 I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. 17 I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit[a] of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. 18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, 19 and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength 20 he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, 21 far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. 22 And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, 23 which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.

Philippians 4:6-7

Romans 7:20-25

20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.

21 So I find this law at work: although I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22 For in my inner being I delight in God’s law; 23 but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me. 24 What a wretched man I am! 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
Believers who have died

13 Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. 14 For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. 15 According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. 16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord for ever. 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words.

Youth Fellowship News

The recent guidelines from the Methodist Church indicated that all meetings except the Sunday service should cease for 4 weeks from 16th October 2020.

This means that the recommencement of Youth Fellowship will now be moved back to the 18th November 2020. Our Youth Pastor Elaine Gowdy has already contacted the young people and their families informing them of this change.

In these times of uncertainty, please remember in your prayers the children, young people and their families connected to our church in Mossley. As you do so, continue to lift up Elaine, so that she is reassured of Gods timing along with His continued provision for the young people under her care within our church building …in Him may they always find a place of Refuge.

Matthew 23:1-12
A warning against hypocrisy

23 Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: ‘The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses’ seat. So you must be careful to do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practise what they preach. They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them.

‘Everything they do is done for people to see: they make their phylacteries[a] wide and the tassels on their garments long; they love the place of honour at banquets and the most important seats in the synagogues; they love to be greeted with respect in the market-places and to be called “Rabbi” by others.

‘But you are not to be called “Rabbi”, for you have one Teacher, and you are all brothers. And do not call anyone on earth “father”, for you have one Father, and he is in heaven. 10 Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one Instructor, the Messiah. 11 The greatest among you will be your servant. 12 For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.

Deuteronomy 6:6-8

These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.

Psalm 1

Blessed is the one
    who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
    or sit in the company of mockers,
but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,
    and who meditates on his law day and night.
That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
    which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither –
    whatever they do prospers.

Not so the wicked!
    They are like chaff
    that the wind blows away.
Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
    nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.

For the Lord watches over the way of the righteous,
    but the way of the wicked leads to destruction.

Philippians 4:4-8
Final exhortations

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things.

Philippians 4:11-13

11 I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. 12 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. 13 I can do all this through him who gives me strength.

Don’t Forget To Set Your Clocks!

The clocks go back tonight to mark the end of ‘daylight saving time’ and the start of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

WHEN DO THEY CHANGE? The clocks go back at 02:00 tomorrow morning. This means all clocks are turned back at that time to 01:00

Isaiah 44:1-7

Israel the Chosen

44 “But now listen, Jacob, my servant,
    Israel, whom I have chosen.
This is what the Lord says—
    he who made you, who formed you in the womb,
    and who will help you:
Do not be afraid, Jacob, my servant,
    Jeshurun,[a] whom I have chosen.
For I will pour water on the thirsty land,
    and streams on the dry ground;

The Lord, Not Idols

Harvest With A Twist?

So many 2020 celebrations have been put on hold or acknowledged a little differently than we would have liked or have been used too. However thanks to Christine McCausland (Secretary) and her trusty side-kick Colin McDowell (Society Steward) this Harvest was one occasion that wasn’t over shadowed. On Sunday Mossleys congregation (adorned in masks and vizors and adhering to social distancing) walked with delight into our church sanctuary and embraced the spirit of Harvest thanks to both of their creative efforts.
