More Than Entertainment: The Power of Watching Together

This Sunday evening at 7:00pm, Mossley Methodist opens its doors for the return of our monthly community viewing of The Chosen. We’re picking up from Season 4, Episode 7, continuing our journey with the disciples as their stories unfold alongside the life of Christ.

But why gather to watch what we could easily stream at home? Because some experiences are richer when shared.

The Magic of Collective Storytelling

The Chosen creator Dallas Jenkins understands this deeply. “We feel like if people can binge watch and have watch parties all over the world for shows like Game of Thrones and Stranger Things, there’s no reason not to binge watch a show about Jesus,” he noted in a recent interview. Jenkins has consistently emphasized how the show brings people together, watching “religious walls that come down” as communities gather around these ancient yet timeless stories.

When we watch alone, we experience the narrative through our own lens. But when we watch together, something beautiful happens—we see through multiple perspectives simultaneously. That moment when Mary Magdalene encounters grace hits differently when you hear someone’s sharp intake of breath beside you. Peter’s struggles with doubt resonate more powerfully when shared in community silence.

Beyond the Screen

Our monthly gatherings are opportunities for connection that extends far beyond the closing credits. As the episode ends and we share thoughts over tea and biscuits, conversations naturally flow from the disciples’ experiences to our own. Questions emerge that might never occur in isolation: “How would I have responded?” “What does this teach us about community?” “Where do I see this playing out in our own lives today?”
These discussions create space for both profound insights and gentle laughter, for wrestling with faith questions and reflecting on possible new perspectives. Sometimes the most meaningful moments happen not during the show itself, but in the quiet conversations afterward—when someone shares how a particular scene spoke to their current situation, or when we discover unexpected connections between first-century struggles and twenty-first-century life.

An Invitation to Deeper Community

Our monthly gatherings welcome everyone—longtime church members and newcomers, seasoned believers and curious seekers, those well-versed in scripture and those encountering these stories fresh.
The beauty lies not just in the shared viewing, but in the shared humanity that emerges as we engage with these deeply human portrayals of the disciples. We see ourselves in Thomas’s skepticism, in Matthew’s longing for belonging, in Mary’s journey from darkness to light.
